All securities in the financial markets fluctuate in value. Historically, most company stocks mirror the performance of the market averages in real time (i.e. they follow the trend together). The long term rate of return in U.S. market averages is approx. 7-8%. Bear markets are, by definition, when the market average falls by 20% or more. Many stocks will magnify the market averages by 1.5-2.5 times, in both directions.
